Edgerton IT Challenge

posted Jan 13, 2012, 6:33 AM by Scott Converse   [ updated Feb 14, 2012, 12:38 PM ]

As part of Ms. Olson's Multimedia courses at the Edgerton high school, I stopped in class to give a talk on IT and careers in the field.  During the class I gave the following IT challenge to students.  If you're an Edgerton School District student, read on and see if you can win $100...

The challenge:  Be the first person/group to come up with a working solution to any of the challenges below and receive a $100 reward.

Rules:  Solutions must be working/testable; concepts only don’t count. The first person or team to solve a problem will receive $100 cash for each solution. No solution should have more than $100 of team money invested. No solution should require existing Edgerton School District infrastructure or equipment (if you receive permission, ESD infrastructure may be used.)  The maximum number of challenges a team or person can receive rewards for is three.  Individuals or teams must be made up of  current ESD students.  Deadline for submissions is September 29th, 2012.  Submit all proposals to Scott Converse – sconverse@bus.wisc.edu .   Decisions made by the challenge review committee are final.

1.)Work with a teacher from an Edgerton school to create a YouTube channel of lessons from their class. Get 5 or more lessons online plus 100 total views; and receive $100.  Note that the teacher chosen has to current NOT have a YouTube channel or videos (sorry Mr. Wanless :)

2.) Create a fixed Wi-Fi network that when a device is connected to the network, doesn’t lose its signal if you walk to 3  of the following locations (you can choose which 3):

·       The front door of the Edgerton Middle School,

·       The 50 yard  home side line of the football field

·       The front door of the high school

·       The front door of the elementary school

Note that the solution needs to be hot-spot independent.  That is, your solution needs to be more than just setting up your smartphone to be a hotspot and then walking next the test device that is moving between the three test locations.  The solution can use smartphone technology, but it needs to be fixed; you shouldn't have to move around with the test device connected to the network.  I'll provide you with 2 WiFi routers; if you want more or plan on solving this with some other technologies, go for it!

3.)Create a portable self-powered printing solution that will allow a person sitting in the coaching tower of the football field to take a photo of field formations and print the image at a sideline bench location.  Players and coaches could then use the printouts to review the photographed pre-snap situations.  Only authenticated devices should be able to print.  I'll even throw in a WiFi router if you need one.

4.)Create a video based solution that allows track and field participants to record launch-like events (long jump, triple jump, high jump, discus, shot put, pole vault, etc.) and then super-impose stick-like figures over the video that show the optimal launch angles.

5.) Create a video database of all the recorded football plays for the past season.  The database would be searchable by team, player, type of play, and display a list of results for which any particular play could then be viewed on a tablet device like an iPad.

6.) Develop a competitive single or multi-player game app for an IOS or Android device that is score based. Note that it needs to be a game that players receive a score in; no "Hello World" apps or simple tools like a flashlight or banner.

7.) Get an app published on the iTunes app store

8.) Create a web site that keeps track of high scores recorded for popular games  such as Battlefield, MW3, Dance Central, or Mario Cart (these are suggested but other titles would be considered).  The site must have way to make sure that scores are “proven” and not fake.  The site should only allow Edgerton students to post scores, and students should be able to create their own authenticated account so others couldn't alter their  posted score(s).

9.) Create a private WiFi network based quiz taking solution for a classroom.  Input devices allowed should be IOS, Android, PC, or Mac.  Teachers should be able to create questions in the solution or on PowerPoint slides.  Questions are then displayed in the front of the room and students enter their results using the device of their choice. The results for each student are recorded and results of all students for a single question or the results for a single student for all questions should be displayable.  I'll even throw in a WiFi router if you need one.

10.) Create a web site that lists of all the open Wi-Fi networks that are within 2 miles of the Edgerton high school.  The list must be dynamically updated to account for the fact that those open networks may go away after time.  Alternatively, if you don't want to create a dynamic list, the list you display must be editable so individuals that have an open network can go to the site and remove the listing.  The list also must show a map like directions on how to get to the network and display the broadcast name of the network.

11.) Create a web page that dynamically keeps a running count on the total number of albums and photos on the Tidersports.com websites and randomly displays a photo from any of the albums every 10 seconds.

Special Events section added to Tidersports

posted Apr 24, 2011, 1:02 PM by Scott Converse

While the theme of the site will always be Edgerton sports (thus the name!), there are a number of special events that happen throughout the year that deserve some special attention.  That's why we've created a "Special Events" section to the site.  Whether it's prom, choir, band, theater, or fests, they'll be located in the  special events section.

Our first special event: Edgerton Junior Prom - 2011
